- Dr. Wilhelm D. Meriwether (1973-74) Recieves Honorary Doctorate
Co-Founder of Meriwether Foundation, Dr. Wilhelm D. Meriwether received an Honorary Doctorate of Sciences Degree at the 2014 Duke University Commencement Ceremony. He was honored by the current President of Duke University for his contributions and accomplishments in medicine, sports and philanthropy.
Dr. Meriwether was the first African American to be admitted and graduate from Duke University School of Medicine. After completing a Masters in Public Health at John Hopkins University, he went on to do research for The CDC, NIH and was appointed as a White House Fellow.
While working as a Professor at John Hopkins and Harvard University he was inspired to work in Africa as a missionary doctor. During his stay in the early 1980s, he helped over a half million people, pro bono, in South Africa.Dr. Meriwether is further known for his accomplishments in sports. At the age of 28, he was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, for breaking the record for the 100 yard dash. He was bound to compete in the Olympic Games until an injury prevented him from doing so.
