THE WHITE HOUSE
October 23, 2008
I send greetings to those gathered to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the White House Fellows Program. Congratulations to Walter J. Humann on receiving the John W. Gardner Legacy of Leadership Award for his commitment to his community and our country . I also congratulate David Rockefeller on receiving the Jack Valenti Friend of the White House Fellows Program Award.
Many White House Fellows alumni across our Nation arc improving the lives of their fellow citizens and contributing to our culture through public service. When President Lyndon Johnson announced the establishment of the White House Fellows program in 1964, he said “A genuinely free society cannot be a spectator society.” As we face the challenges and seize the opportunities of a new era, we remember these words and know that America will rely on the energy, dedication, and ambition of our next generation of leaders. The White House Fellows Program serves as an investment in the future of our country.
I appreciate those who have served as White House Fellows and all who arc committed to the success of this program. Your efforts demonstrate the best of the American spirit and inspire others to build a more hopeful society.
Laura and I send our best wishes.
