- Nicole Malachowski (2008-09) receives the 2019 IMPACT Award
The White House Fellows Foundation and Association is pleased to announce we will be presenting the 2019 IMPACT Award to Nicole Malachowski (2008-09). The IMPACT Award recognizes recent White House Fellows who have demonstrated both remarkable achievement and transformational contributions in their field, as well as a sustained commitment to the White House Fellows program. Nicole Malachowski exemplifies these criteria in every way.
Colonel Nicole Malachowski (USAF, Ret.) served more than 21 years in the Air Force as a fighter pilot, commander, and senior staff leader. Nicole served in three operational F-15E squadrons and accumulated over 2,300 flight hours, including 188 hours in combat. She commanded a fighter squadron, was the first female USAF Thunderbird pilot, and served as Executive Director of the Joining Forces Initiative in the White House. Working directly for Mrs. Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, she helped guide White House policy on all issues affecting service members, veterans, and military families across the areas of education, employment, and wellness.
Nicole’s military career ended prematurely when she was medically retired from service due to the impact of late stage, neurological, Tick Borne Illness. As a newly minted Wounded Warrior in the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program, she mentors several fellow patients throughout their personal journeys and coordinates events that enhance the camaraderie necessary for recovery.
Nicole has turned a significant life-challenge into a life-changing cause: advocating at the national level for other Tick Borne Illness patients. She serves on the board of the LivLyme Foundation and the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program Panel on Tick Borne Diseases. She was also competitively selected to serve on the patient advocate subcommittee of the newly formed Department of Health and Human Services Tick Borne Diseases Working Group.
Nicole is the proud wife of Paul Malachowski, a fellow Air Force veteran, and the mother of nine-year-old twins.
Nicole embodies the spirit of John Gardner’s vision, and is a most-deserving recipient of the IMPACT Award!
