  • Michelle Obama Receives the 2017 Jack Valenti Friend of the White House Fellows Award

The WHFFA presents this award to outstanding supporters of the program, who are not themselves former Fellows, for their efforts to enhance the reputation and visibility of the White House Fellows program.

Past recipients of this award include: David Rockefeller, Bill Moyers, Joan Klein, Tenley Albright, Susan Eisenhower, John Phillips, and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Family.

From 2010 to 2016, Mrs. Obama hired White House Fellows to create and lead the “Joining Forces” initiative designed to rally all sectors of society around service members, veterans, and their families and support them through employment, education and wellness efforts. Mrs. Obama empowered White House Fellows with the resources and staff of the Office of the First Lady to maximize the impact of the initiative, ultimately guiding the national conversation around veterans and service members to make an unprecedented impact on civil-military relations.

Mrs. Obama participated in seminars with all White House Fellow classes from 2009-2016, often devoting extended time to answer questions from every member of the class. Prior to becoming First Lady Mrs. Obama also served as a Chicago Regional Panelist for many years.

We hope to present the award to Mrs. Obama – either in-person, or via video message – during our Annual Leadership Conference in Washington D.C., October 26-28, 2017.

The White House Fellows Foundation and Association (WHFFA) is extremely pleased to announce that we will be presenting the 2017 Jack Valenti Friend of the White House Fellows Award to former First Lady Michelle Obama.
