- Message from the President of the WHFFA
Dear White House Fellows:
I express to you my heartfelt thanks for selecting me as President. I am both humbled and honored to serve you, and I pledge to do so with passion and energy.
As we begin this journey together, I ask that we rededicate ourselves to strengthening the bonds that make the White House Fellowship the premier leadership program in the nation. Together, we can foster greater connections between alumni and the current fellows; between alumni and the Commissioners; between alumni and other stakeholders; and especially amongst each other. By enhancing these relationships, we can better strive to achieve John Gardner’s dream of developing future generations of Americans with “more than ordinary comprehension of government and more than ordinary willingness to serve.”
Our steadfast participation in this great experiment is needed now more than ever. The fellowship forever changed my life and taught me valuable skills to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The same holds true for so many of you. Therefore, please continue working tirelessly to improve the program and make it that much better. Our highly dedicated Board of Directors and Executive Staff have developed numerous events and projects that require your assistance.
Our first goal is to help recruit the best and brightest pool of candidates for next year’s class of White House Fellows. We seek diversity in every possible manner and we need your help to achieve it. The Commission has recently updated the application and posted it here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/participate/fellows/application. Please help us recruit candidates by reaching out to individuals you may know; organizing information sessions at special events and conferences; and through your personal and professional networks. Please reach out to me or David and let’s work to schedule at least 25 new information sessions to help spread the word!
Moving beyond the fall recruiting season, we hope you will join us at one of our many planned trips early next calendar year. We are planning a Regional Conference in Miami, on February 18-19, in lieu of the postponed Cuba trip. A conference call will soon be scheduled to discuss the trip for those interested in participating, and we welcome your ideas.
The Miami trip will be followed by a visit to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from April 12-13, 2018. The conference will examine various aspects of Ford’s Presidency including foreign and domestic policy, and will include panels of White House Fellows who served in the Ford Administration. We will let you know as soon as the conference registration “goes live” – which we expect to occur about a month from now.
Please know that the Board of Directors is dedicated to serving the collective interests of your association in every possible way. Ensuring this remains an unparalleled experience requires the help of every White House Fellow so that we, collectively, can continue to serve our great nation in the best way possible.
Full Speed Ahead!
With warmest regards to all,
Carlos Del Toro
