Search for Director, Scaling What Works, a new initiative of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (Washington, DC)

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) has retained Slesinger Management Services to recruit a person who is knowledgeable about philanthropy, public policy, and successful ways to help nonprofit organizations grow and expand to serve as Director of Scaling What Works, a new program that will extend the reach of the recently-launched Social Innovation Fund (SIF) and other efforts by grantmakers to expand effective community-based solutions. This person will be part of GEO's senior management team. The job is based in Washington, DC.

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations is a coalition of more than 350 foundations and other grantmakers committed to building strong and effective nonprofit organizations. Founded in 1997 and based in Washington, DC, GEO has a staff of 16 and a budget of $2.9 million. Revenue comes primarily from grants, member dues, and meeting registration fees.

With grant support totaling more than $4 million over three years from an independent coalition of 21 funders, Scaling What Works will leverage what grantmakers are learning about how to best expand solutions to society's most pressing problems. By clarifying what's working on the ground, this project will ensure that public and private resources, including SIF dollars, can more effectively flow to the highest performing nonprofits so that successful community solutions can grow and expand.

Key Skills Desired

Among many other important attributes, the Director of Scaling What Works should be:
  • Committed to the mission of GEO, demonstrated by prior professional experience at the national level.
  • A sophisticated facilitator of group process who is able to integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders.
  • Knowledgeable about philanthropy and the work of grantmaking institutions.
  • Knowledgeable about capacity-building within nonprofit organizations.
  • Experienced with high-performing nonprofits whose success has led to significant and sustained growth.
